Character Name: Alice Dainard

Timeline: After being taken captive

Character History: The year is 1979 and Alice is rebelling against what her father tells her to. Ever since her mother left the two of them when Alice was younger, she's been headstrong and rebellious to try and cope with his excessive drinking. With the long hours her father has to work at the steel mill it's not like anyone's around to stop her from doing what she wants. After an incident where her father's blamed for the death of a co-worker, Alice decides to help a boy from school named Charles with making a zombie movie on super 8 film. With the goal of entering the movie in an international competition, Alice is excited to be the leading lady in the film and get to help make artistic decisions. Not used to getting to express herself, she likes the chance to be able to show her inner thoughts and feelings through what they're doing artistically. She really gets into her persona in the film and uses it to cover up her true self, and the fact that she's hurting and in pain because she feels alone and like she's had to raise herself while dealing with an alcoholic father.

She befriends Charles' friends Martin and Cary, but becomes particularly close to Joe. This is something she knows her father won't approve of, because Joe is the son of the woman who died at the steel mill. The one who her father is blamed for letting die. Joe knows his mother won't like their friendship either, but the two grow close anyway. A puppy love sort of relationship develops between the two, which deepens once their lives become much more complicated. One night, she sneaks out of her house and over to Joe's, going through his bedroom window. She opens up to him about her mother and about how hard it is to have her father not be around because of work and his drinking, and admits that she knows her father wishes it had been him that died in the accident instead of Joe's mother. Alice also admits that she wishes it had been her died that died, too.

Time goes by and Alice steals her dad's car to get everyone to the train yard to film at midnight, the kids witness a truck hit a train and cause a massive derailment. This causes the area they're in and the nearby depot to be destroyed, and the kids barely make it out of things okay. When they go back to investigate the wreckage, they find strange cubes that seem to futuristic to be anything from 1979 and their science teacher in the truck that hit the train. After being threatened by their teacher at gunpoint, the kids run. From that point on, they're all involved in a crazy adventure, whether they want to be or not.

Weird things start happening in town the next day, like all the dogs running away and power going crazy. People are also going missing, and after Alice doesn't meet up with them to help develop the film from the night before. It turns out she's been taken in the middle of the night, when she took too long getting back home from the train yard. Her curious nature led her in close to what Joe and the others find out from film footage is an alien creature. If she had listened to her father and was home when she was supposed to be, she likely would be just fine. As the military infiltrates their town and begins to forcibly evacuate everyone, Joe and the others are forced to make tough choices in order to find and save Alice from the alien life they've discovered on film.

Alice will come into Wonderland after being taken and being forced into underground tunnels and caverns. This will be her trip down the rabbit hole, where she wakes up and finds herself in Wonderland. Depending on how into taking on a personal she'll be, she may let people think she's a version of Alice from the storybook. She'd rather have a role to play then own up to recent events or let people get to know the real her. She'll be grateful to have a break from her alcoholic father, and is able to cut ties with her old life back home to make a new one here.

Abilities/Special Powers: Alice has no special abilities or powers.

Third-Person Sample:

After the last time she hid from her dad when he was drunk and in an awful mood, Alice didn't like closets. The one here in Wonderland was magic though. After being told about how it worked she played with the one in her bedroom for hours. In the end, she had too many clothes and old issues of Tiger Beat. But there was still something she needed. Something that made her heart hurt just to think about. She never really had a lot of friends because of who she was and where she lived, but Joe and the others had become her best friends. She already missed them.

Her mind thought of the movie they had been making together, and the way her life had changed so quickly because of what they had stumbled into. Thinking about the movie made her wants clear and soon the closet granted her wish. She saw the camera and the boxes of Super 8 film sitting neatly on top of a pile of Tiger Beat issues from 1978 and grabbed the camera so she could hold it close to her chest.

She thought about Joe and the others, and soon felt tears come to her eyes. It was easy to be overwhelmed by the sadness she was feeling and as she laid down on the floor she curled up and kept the camera held close. She cried quietly, just in case she had neighbors that might overhear. Within minutes she was asleep, dreaming of Joe climbing through her window here to find her.

When she woke up, the reality of her situation didn't feel as grim. She was alone here, but she was used to that. There were other kids here close to her age, and she was in a mansion with endless possibilities. It was sad to lose her home but she still had so much to look forward to. Her dad wasn't here, and she didn't have to deal with his drinking. It's almost like a fresh start.

She climbs to her feet and goes over to look at her reflection in the mirror that's hanging over the closet door. There's still some bruises on her face but they'll heal quickly. Still holding the camera close to her heart she smiles.

"Bad things happened. But I can still live."

First-Person Sample:

[She's still getting used to the fact that the kitchen here has anything she may want, including newer foods that haven't even been invented yet in her time. 1979 isn't the best year for great food. But the 1980's apparently have a lot going on in that department. She's in the middle of eating a junk cereal with a vampire on the box when she records her message.]

Somebody told me that the closets can give you almost anything you want. If I can get the right camera and film, would anyone want to help me make a movie?

[Without school or anything here she needs something to fill her time.]

I was making a zombie movie back home with my friends. But I think I want to try something else here.

[She smiles and takes a long sip of the straw coming from her bottle of Yoohoo chocolate "milk".]
